Replacing CPAP Equipment on time is extremely important. As with any type of medical equipment, over consistent use both CPAP machines, masks, and their accessories will break down due to normal wear and tear. Whether it’s the oils from your skin impacting the cushions on your CPAP mask, or the hours put into your machine and the accompanying heated CPAP humidifier, replacing equipment will have positive impacts on your sleep apnea and the therapy you receive from using your CPAP equipment.
Each individual part of a continuous positive airway pressure set up is different, and the replacement schedules vary depending on the part, and most importantly how well you are taking care of your equipment. First and foremost, wash all of the parts of your mask daily, especially the cushion, with the bare minimum of warm water and a mild soap, although we recommend either getting the CPAP mask wipes or spray.
Your CPAP tubing should also be cleaned out, the CPAP tube brush works best as it will scrape away all of the bad. With bacteria build up, you’re not only destroying the tube, but you might be having negative effects on your overall health as well. Humidifiers should be washed and cleaned every morning after use, and distilled water works best.
The following is a basic guideline for when you should replace your CPAP equipment, but each person is difference, so if your mask is not fitting well or leaking more, it’s time to replace the cushion, and if your machine is not as effective as it was when you first got it, it’s probably time to look at upgrading!
CPAP Machine: Replace your CPAP machine after 3 to 5 years if you are using it every night.
Disposable Filters: CPAP filters should be disposed of after 4 to 6 weeks of regular use
Cleanable Filters: Clean weekly, and dispose of them every 6 to 12 months depending on their condition
CPAP Tubing: Clean every morning, and due to health concerns replace your tube every 2 to 4 months
CPAP Mask: Dependent upon each person, but usually should be replaced after 6 months
CPAP Mask Cushion and pillow: Replace your CPAP mask cushion after 2 to 3 months, clean every morning
CPAP Mask Headgear: Requires a replacement every 3 to 4 months depending on how well it still fits
Those are the main parts of your mask and machine that will require replacements. Pay attention to your gear and replace as needed, as medical equipment is very vital to your overall health, and treating sleep apnea will benefit you greatly! Just remember, replacing CPAP equipment is vital to improving your health and treating your sleep disorder right!
